AI marking: how to mark student work with teacher oversight
What is AI marking?
AI marking uses artificial intelligence to suggest marks and feedback against assessment criteria. Automarking and automatic marking are other terms teachers use for this process. In TicknClick, you upload student work and your own PDF mark scheme. The software produces a first draft for you to review before you finalise the results.
How to mark student work with AI
Start with a clear mark scheme that explains the expected answers and how marks are awarded. Prepare either scanned PDFs of handwritten work or individual digital documents. Upload the work and scheme, then review each suggestion alongside the original response. Adjust marks and comments where needed, confirm each submission and finalise the set. You can then export a marks spreadsheet and individual Word feedback documents.
Choose the right upload route
For handwritten work, diagrams or embedded equations, use the scanned PDF route. A combined scan works for equal-length papers; individual PDFs allow different submission lengths. For digital text, supported formats include DOCX, TXT, ODT, RTF, Markdown and text-based PDFs. Essay mode adds paragraph comments as well as an overall mark and detailed feedback.
What should a teacher check?
Check that the AI has read the response correctly, applied the right part of the mark scheme and awarded an appropriate score. Review equivalent wording, calculations and any unclear handwriting. Uncertainty flags help direct attention, but an unflagged answer can still be wrong. Review every suggestion, including the written feedback, before sharing results with students.
Prepare student work responsibly
Remove names and other identifying details before uploading, and follow your school’s requirements. Submission content and the mark scheme are sent to the configured AI provider. The cover-page exclusion option removes selected cover pages before scanned work is sent for marking; it does not remove identifying details elsewhere in the work.
Pay-as-you-go marking
TicknClick uses credit packs rather than a monthly subscription. The required credits depend on submission count, marked pages and essay mode. Check the quote before submitting a set.
