AI essay marking with paragraph-by-paragraph feedback

A first draft of essay feedback

Essay marking involves interpreting a student’s argument and applying assessment criteria. TicknClick can draft a question-level mark, detailed feedback and comments on each paragraph. You review these suggestions against the essay and your mark scheme before finalising. The teacher remains responsible for the final judgement.

Set up an essay marking set

Prepare the student submissions and a PDF mark scheme with the criteria you want to apply. Select “Includes essays” when uploading. Use the digital text route for supported typed documents, or scanned PDFs for handwritten work and documents containing images or embedded equations. Remove student names and other identifying details before uploading, following your school’s requirements.

What feedback does essay mode provide?

Essay questions receive an overall question mark, detailed feedback and paragraph-level comments. This lets you check the overall assessment alongside the more specific comments. Structured questions in the same marking set still receive question-by-question feedback, so an assessment can include both essays and shorter responses.

Review the argument as well as the score

Read the original essay alongside the suggested feedback. Check that comments refer to what the student actually wrote and that the mark reflects the supplied criteria. Pay attention to reasoning, evidence and any valid approach the draft may have overlooked. Edit feedback that is inaccurate, too general or unsuitable for the student. AI can make errors without raising an uncertainty flag.

Export the reviewed feedback

Once every submission has been reviewed and confirmed, finalise the set. Download individual Word feedback documents containing the reviewed marks and comments, plus a spreadsheet of marks and percentages. You can edit, print or share the exported documents through your normal school workflow.

Check the credit quote before submitting

Essay mode can require more credits than a set of structured questions. The quote depends on the submissions, marked pages and whether essays are included. TicknClick uses credit packs with no monthly subscription. Check the current homepage pricing and the upload quote before starting the set.
